After grabbing some energy food (read: Wendy’s), off we headed to Big Day Out. Within about an hour of arriving, I saw one guy get arrested with the cops doing the old shake of the bag of drugs in his face (crack I think?) neatly concealed in a glad bag (better living everyone).
I needed to go toilet after pre-emptive hydration, and there was probably more girls in the guys toilets than guys themselves queuing for the stall (while I pretended none of this was happening and went about my business). It would suck to be a girl.

I think we went and saw Kora first, and just relaxed on the grass. Speaking of grass, it smelt of weed just about the whole day -- and as Sam put it I think the cops were taking a “boys will be boys” attitude towards it. Either that or they came to their senses and realized that it is too hard to pinpoint who is just smoking tobacco since you can’t really escape the smell. When we went to go see Peaches in the boiler, it was way worse (read: hotbox).
It was good to finally see Peaches in person, even though so many of her songs are pretty fringe. She played in the boiler room and it was one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen. Peaches sung and danced which is actual entertainment (not like some ‘entertainers’).
It seemed like underground grunge club with the mix of her performance and the boiler, and she certainly played it up. At one point she goes “Jesus walked on water, Peaches walks on people” and then started walking on the crowd. It might have been was my favorite gig of the day. Steph walked out saying “I feel like that changed my life somehow”. Classic!
Next we went to go see Dizzee Rascal on the main stage, but it was really packed. We got seats just to the side eventually which was so much better because no one could be constantly pushing past and annoying us (that, and I got a stage). He was just ok at the start because he played all of his oldskool stuff, but then he played Dance Wiv Me, Holiday and then came on for an encore of Bonkers (which I thought he was just going to not perform).
After Dizzee Rascal played, the V Energy Drink guy actually jetpacked from behind the left of this photo, out and around the two stages and landed behind the far right of the photo. I thought that it was a wire or something, but it was an actual jetpack and was really loud. It could have gone horribly wrong… I tried to get a video but it was over so quick I missed it.
Getting the wrist bands to say that you are ok to go into the R18 areas (bars etc) was such a mission. They really needed more tents setup for this, but I went with Sam while the girls were at Jet to get one (I’m a little over Jet these days anyway). I brought a couple of beers, but the price was horrific (I nearly died). No wonder I didn’t see heaps of turfed as teens running around (poor students). We watched Lilly Allen perform from there -- she looks way skinner in person (maybe she has lost weight, or maybe the camera really does add 10kg). They don’t let you take alcohol out of the bar areas, so they do bag checks and pocket checks too if you’re lucky on the way out.
I remember smirking slightly at Nick for some reason as we were leaving one time, and I think the security guard saw because he called Nick back (after he had just let him past), and then pulled up his shirt at the back and had a good check down the back of his pants. I hope the security guard felt like a dick, because there was obviously nothing in there. Speaking of security, I had 2 full pat downs on my way in (I was lucky). I don’t have any problem with this, but they didn’t check anything in my pockets that they did feel (flip-knife anyone?) so I think it was pretty pointless.
Later that night…
Muse played! We got seats again to avoid all the sweaty shirtless guys and smelly dreads being flicked in our faces.
The lasers and video screens were amazing and really lived up to Muse’s reputation of being awesome live. They opened with Uprising (which I thought they would save for last) and played an awesome set.
After Muse we headed to the boiler room (which is just a massive massive tent / marquee that holds thousands and is really warm and sweaty) to see Groove Armada. A massive dance party was just what I felt like, and this filled the void quite nicely. The lighting was quite impressive see:
We wrapped up with Superstylin’ as our last song which they extended a bit. I was covered in sweat and had such a good day. My feet were pretty sore and my eyes glazed as (from the sun/ smoke everywhere I think).
While waiting for Sam to meet us at McDonald’s, we saw a car go past with a guy leaning out the passenger window with vomit all down the side of the car, and tears streaming down his face. Stay classy huh.
